2000 Chevrolet Malibu Rack And Pinion Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion steering gear on 2000 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The next step is to jack up the vehicle using a hoist and then do away with the tire and wheel assemblies. Then, remove the stabilizer shaft links from the control arms and take the tie rod ends off of the Steering Knuckle. Then, remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt from the Rack And Pinion and jack the rear of the support frame with jack stands. Hold the transmission side of the stabilizer shaft and the housing and remove the nuts to remove the stabilizer shaft. Similarly, while watching the other end of the stabilizer shaft, maintain hold on the power steering hoses at the Rack And Pinion, then take off the collars and pull out the hoses from the Rack And Pinion. It will look like a pair of screws without a nut on one end. Simply just pull them out. This is done to have room for removing the Rack And Pinion. Subsequently, remove the Rack And Pinion bolts from the frame and pull out the Rack And Pinion through the left wheel opening. For the maintenance, tighten Rack And Pinion bolts onto the frame to 110 nm (81 ft. Lbs.) as you place the Rack And Pinion on the vehicle. Then attach the power steering hoses to the Rack And Pinion, put in the stabilizer shaft, and torque the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to the Rack And Pinion to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). After that, attach the tie rod ends to the Steering Knuckle, attach the stabilizer shaft links to the control arms and also reattach the tire and wheel assemblies. Finally, lower the vehicle and bleed off the air inside the power steering system.
