2000 Chevrolet Metro Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the power steering pump on 2000 Chevrolet Metro?
A: The first step for Power Steering Pump replacement requires disabling the vehicle engine and plugging all pipe and hose openings at the power steering gear to avoid fluid loss and contamination. The replacement process starts by removing the bolt that maintains the connection between the high pressure hose and core support and ends with separating the high pressure hose from the pressure pipe at this support point. Removing the Power Steering Pump starts with clamping off the return hose at the reservoir before disconnecting the psp switch connector. The first step involves lifting the vehicle before belt removal from the Power Steering Pump. The A/C Compressor installation requires removing a set of three bolts before hanging up the compressor to the side of the work area. So, unfasten the 4 bolts holding the mounting bracket to the engine and remove the Power Steering Hose combined with the bracket and pump out of the engine bay. First remove the 3 Power Steering Pump mounting bolts and later remove the hose clamp followed by the return hose from the pump. Additionally remove the pump's nut and lock washer and high pressure hose. Fasten the return hose to the pump by using a hose clamp before attaching the high pressure hose that receives a lock washer and nut until it reaches 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque. Use the 3 bolts to fix the Power Steering Pump on the mounting bracket while torquing to 35 nm (25 ft. Lbs.). Mount the bracket to the engine with 4 bolts that require torque between 46.8 - 50.4 nm (63.7 - 68.6 ft. Lbs.). Screw the A/C Compressor onto the mounting bracket using 3 bolts that need to be tightened between 22.5 - 27.4 nm (16.5 - 20.1 ft. Lbs.). Finally, position the Power Steering Pump Drive Belt followed by car descent then reconnect all power steering tubing and hoses. Set the psp switch connector to the pump before you install the return hose to the reservoir then use a hose clamp for securing it. Fasten the high pressure hose on the core support with the bolt in position but leave it partially loose. Tighten the high pressure hose fastener which connects to the high pressure pipe from the steering gear through its flare nut. The bolt retaining the high pressure hose to the core support needs to be tightened to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) and the flare nut requires 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Finish the power steering procedure by adding new fluid to the reservoir and performing a power steering system bleeding.
