Chevrolet Metro Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Power Steering Pump on Chevrolet Metro?
A: Installation of the new power steering pump shaft oil seal must be done using a socket and a hammer before beginning the repair process. Apply power steering fluid GM P/N 12346143 equivalent to the pump shaft followed by attachment of the pump shaft pulley to the pump body. Place the same fluid on the new O-rings before putting them into position on the pump body. Position the side plate against the pump body by verifying that its pin grooves match up with the cover bolt holes. Place the new rotor on the pump shaft while applying power steering fluid to its sliding surface before mounting it with its dent marked section toward the pump cover. The installation of the pump shaft snap ring into the proper position requires a fluid application step onto the cam ring sliding surface followed by installation starting with the side marked as number 5 facing toward the side plate. Anti-friction fluid should be applied on each vane plate before installing them onto the rotor with the R portion facing away from the unit. Install the new O-ring at the rear cover of the pump body after applying fluid to its surfaces. Secure the pump cover through 4 bolts by tightening them to 24 Nm (17.5 ft. lbs.). Regularly check that the power steering pump shaft rotates smoothly without creating unusual noises while carrying out a disassembly and inspection if abnormal sounds occur. After adding fluid to the relief valve you need to place the relief valve spring and the relief valve to the pump body with the correct valve movement. The first step includes applying fluid to the O-rings prior to installing new rings at the high pressure line connector before attaching the connector to the pump body with a torque setting of 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.). Secure the pressure sensor to the pump body by torquing it to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.) after installing a new O-ring that received fluid applied to it. The O-ring installation at the inlet pipe must be completed by applying fluid before placing the new O-ring and securing the inlet pipe using 2 bolts tightened to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.). Transfer the power steering gear pump from its position in the soft jaw vise.
