2000 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on 2000 Chevrolet Suburban 1500?
A: The first step to work on steering knuckles involves suspension and support of the vehicle before removal. When servicing the Steering Knuckle remove the tire then the wheel assembly followed by disconnecting the real time damping (RTD) link rod sensor when applicable. Place a jack under the lower Control Arm before removing the rotor. First clean the hub and bearing assembly from the knuckle before disconnecting the outer tie rod from the assembly. Starting with the knuckle removal process begins with the brake hose bracket bolt followed by upper Ball Joint and lower Ball Joint separation from the knuckle. Finally, remove the Steering Knuckle. During Steering Knuckle installation ensure all tapered parts including the Ball Joint sections and threads of the upper Ball Joint and lower Ball Joint and tie rod end receive thorough cleaning while checking the knuckle's taper holes and mounting surfaces for defects requiring replacement when holes become elongated out of round or damaged. Start by installing the knuckle while you connect the ball joints from bottom to top. Tighten the brake hose bracket retaining bolt on the knuckle to 9 nm torque (80 inch lbs. Of torque). First fit the outer tie rod section onto the knuckle before adding the hub with bearing assembly and rotor in sequence. If equipped with a sensor check, connect the rtd link rod then attach the tire-wheel assembly followed by safety stand removal and vehicle lowering.
