2000 Chevrolet Tracker Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Front Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2000 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: To remove the Rack And Pinion, it is first important to make sure the wheels are straight ahead and that the Steering Column is in the lock position to avoid damaging the coil assembly. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint system (SIR). Before continuing, pump out the power steering fluid from the tank using a syringe and lift and hold the vehicle. Then remove the skid plate and left outer Tie Rod nut from the knuckle as well as use the universal steering linkage puller (J24319-B) to remove the left outer Tie Rod End. Repeat the same process for the right outer Tie Rod. Depress a pan under the Rack And Pinion and eliminate the gilt of the steering gear inlet pipe/hose bolt and two gaskets from the Rack And Pinion inlet pipe. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir hose and plug the hoses to prevent the loss of fluid. Unfasten the intermediate Steering Shaft clamp bolt and pull off the lower Steering Shaft from the Rack And Pinion. I would also paint-mark the pinion shaft and Rack And Pinion housing for realignment. Remove the four Rack And Pinion and mounting bolts and remove the Rack And Pinion with the insulators and brackets. Unscrew the two Tie Rod lock nuts and remove the outer Tie Rod ends from the aligning Tie Rod. For installation, match mark inner tie-rods and install the Tie Rod lock nuts without tightening. Provide attachment of outer Tie Rod ends and have the match marks on the pinion shaft and Rack And Pinion housing aligned with one another. Mount the two insulators onto the Rack And Pinion and fit the Rack And Pinion to the two brackets and tighten the four bolts to 55 nm (40.0 lb.ft.). Join the lower steering tract and screw the intermediate steering tract clamp bolt to 25 nm (18.0 ft. Lbs.). Mount the power steering fluid reservoir hose and Rack And Pinion inlet pipe/hose with the two gaskets and bolt for tightening to 35 nm (25.5 ft. Lbs.), respectively. Remount the skid plate and lower the vehicle, charge the reservoir with dexron, (R)-iii automatic transmission fluid gm p/n 12346143 or equivalent, and bleed logic control power steering system. Then, the sir, and measure the front toe, adjust it if needed, and tighten the Tie Rod lock nut to 65 nm (47 ft. Lbs.).
