2000 GMC Safari Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace brake calipers on 2000 GMC Safari?
A: To install the new brake caliper start by taking out two-thirds of brake fluid from the master cylinder and then lifting up the vehicle to remove tire and wheel components. You should apply a c-clamp onto the caliper and its outer pad, slowly push the piston down until it reaches the bottom of its bore, then remove the c-clamp. You need to stop the brake hose from connecting to the caliper, then undo the mounting bolts to pull out both the caliper assembly and the brake pads plus bushings. (RWD vehicles require taking out the sleeves too). Do not try to clean corroded bolts or sleeves before replacing them. You should coat bushings and sleeves with delco silicone lube (GM P/N 18010909 or equivalent) before installing both elements (RWD only) and afterward moving on to Brake Pad installation. Put the caliper assembly into place while bolting the mounting points at 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.), afterward connect the brake hose to the caliper and screw its bolt to 44 nm (32 ft. Lbs.). Use a ruler to check the space between the caliper and Steering Knuckle at both ends then combine the measurements. The finished space should measure 0.26 to 0.60 millimeters (0.01 to 0.02 inch). You should file the Steering Knuckle equally from both sides until the total clearance reaches 0.26 mm (0.010 inch). An excessive total clearance above 0.60 mm (0.024 inch) dictates replacing the brake caliper and Steering Knuckle parts for damage. Put the tire and wheel on then lower the vehicle down before pumping the brake until firm and looking at brake fluid in the master cylinder while also bleeding the brake system.
