2001 GMC Safari Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Brake Calipers on 2001 GMC Safari?
A: Start brake caliper replacement by checking the master cylinder reservoir fluid level. When it sits at mid-point between maximum and minimum marks fluid bleeding is unnecessary but adjustable to mid-point if above minimum mark. Lift the vehicle above the ground and take out the tire and wheel components. Keep the rotor secured with a lug nut for r4wd models by hand-tightening it. Place a large c-clamp on top of the caliper to push the piston until you can slide the caliper off the rotor. After removing the brake hose-to-caliper bolt put the 2 rubber gaskets in the trash and stop further fluid leakage by plugging the front brake hose opening without damaging the hose. Take off the brake caliper mounting bolts to remove it along with the brake pads, bushings, and sleeves for the rwd design. Check for damage and corrosion on caliper bolts during inspection and replace them as needed. Use denatured alcohol to clean brake caliper pin bolts and retainers then blow them dry using filtered air before applying high temperature brake silicone lubricant to both. Keep the lubricant away from Brake Pad hardware. Put in the bushings and brake pads plus brake sleeves then install the caliper unit. Tighten mount bolts to 51 nm (38 ft.lbs.) using new copper gaskets on the brake hoses. Detach the brake hose and insert new copper gaskets before threading the brake hose bolt onto the brake hose end. Fasten it to 44 nm (32 ft. Lbs.) torque. Check the measurement between the caliper and Steering Knuckle with the rotor removed. Maintain a clearance between 0.26 - 0.60 mm (0.010 - 0.024 inch) and adjust the Steering Knuckle by filing if necessary. Replace damaged parts if the clearance exceeds 0.60 mm. Last put on the tire and wheel while lowering the car and adding brake fluid before bleeding the braking system.
