2001 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake pads on 2001 GMC Safari?
A: Before one can replace the brake pads, they must check whether the fluid contained in the brake master cylinder reservoir is in the correct quantity. If the level is past the midway between the max-full point and the min requirements, remove fluid to the midway. Lift and support the vehicle and remove the tire and wheel assembly. For r4wd, install and hand tighten a lug nut to hold the rotor. First, use a large c-clamp on top of the caliper housing pressed onto back of outboard pad to press down on the front caliper Piston until it can be slid off, then remove the c-clamp. Hold the brake caliper down with heavy mechanic's wire in such a way that the hydraulic flexible brake hose is not damaged. Lift-off the caliper from the mounting bracket without removing the hydraulic brake flexible hose, deliver the inboard Brake Pad (RWD only), and the retainer spring (RWD only), and the outboard Brake Pad (RWD only) or inboard and outboard brake pads (R4WD only). Check the condition of the disc brake mounting fasteners and caliper dust boot for any damage, and replace the damaged components unless otherwise stated. Check for corrosion on caliper bolts; if found use new parts, including bushings during re-institution. For installation, bottom the Piston into the caliper bore using an old Brake Pad or wooden block to prevent damaging the Piston or caliper boot, then install the inboard and outboard Brake Pad (R4WD only), with the retainer spring on the inboard Brake Pad (RWD only) and outboard Brake Pad (RWD only). Compress the outboard pad ears to the caliper (RWD only) and install the caliper mounting bolts and tighten to 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.). Take off the wheel lug nut that holds the rotor to the hub (R4WD only), install the tire and wheel, and drop the vehicle. Turn off the engine and gradually press the Brake Pedal 2/3 the distance for which it would travel, then release it gradually but slowly. Wait for 15 seconds before repeating this procedure till a firm Brake Pedal is achieved to properly seat the brake caliper pistons and Brake Pad. Lastly, replace the brake master cylinder with the required level, and burnish the pads as well as the rotors.
