2000 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the lower intake manifold on 2000 GMC Safari?
A: Start the lower Intake Manifold replacement by disconnecting the negative Battery Cable followed by removing the engine cover. First drain the cooling system before removing the air cleaner assembly and air cleaner outlet duct from the Throttle Body. Cable connections for accelerator control and cruise control (if present) must be separated from throttle shaft and bracket. Remove first the PCV Valve Hose assembly from both the Intake Manifold and the valve rocker arm cover. Then separate the Intake Manifold stud from the bracket applied to the a/c hose and from the bracket conducting the engine wiring harness. Disconnect these electrical wires: a/c compressor clutch and a/c high pressure cutoff switch and throttle position (TP) sensor and idle air control (IAC) motor and fuel meter body assembly connector and manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor and evap canister purge solenoid valve and egr valve electrical connector. Disconnect the ground wire from the water outlet stud and also separate the nut together with the engine wiring harness bracket from the evap canister purge solenoid valve stud. Reposition the engine wire harness then unscrew each of these components from the Intake Manifold: evap canister purge solenoid valve, radiator inlet hose, heater hose, and water pump inlet hose. First detach the vacuum hose and unfasten the bolt connecting the transmission fluid filler tube to the accelerator control cable bracket after which the accelerator control cable bracket can be detached from the Throttle Body and Intake Manifold. Separate the Distributor and then cut off the fuel supply lines together with return lines that attach to the rear part of the Intake Manifold. First remove the ignition control module (ICM) and detach the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve inlet pipe. Access to the front Intake Manifold bolt requires Drive Belt removal followed by a/c compressor side brace removal while loosing the power steering pump rear bracket nut and removing the oil filler tube bracket bolt and oil filler tube. Start by removing nuts and bolts from the power steering pump mounting bracket before sliding the pump bracket forward to reveal the front Intake Manifold bolt. Clean all sealing surfaces on the lower Intake Manifold before installation. The assembly process should be followed if new parts need to be installed. Installation requires placing the lower Intake Manifold in position while repositioning the power steering pump mounting bracket with three bolts and a nut torqued to 41 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Install the a/c compressor side brace and bolts, tightening to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) and 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) respectively. Install the oil filler tube and bolt, tightening to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.)follow up with Drive Belt installation. Reinstall the egr valve inlet pipe alongside the evap canister purge solenoid valve and the fuel supply and return pipes. To install the Distributor follow these steps: align the engine to number one cylinder top dead center, remove the Spark Plug, rotate the Crankshaft to compression stroke, align Distributor reference marks, then reinstall the Spark Plug and Distributor. Install the icm, accelerator control cable bracket, vacuum hose, and transmission fluid fill tube, tightening the respective bolts to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) and 6 nm (53 inch lbs.). Replace the water pump inlet hose followed by heater hoses and radiator inlet hose installation. The engine wiring harness needs proper positioning for electrical connectivity with the a/c compressor clutch , a/c high pressure cutoff switch , throttle position (TP) sensor , idle air control (IAC) motor , fuel meter body assembly connector , manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor , evap canister purge solenoid valve , and egr valve . Install the ground wire and tighten to 19 nm (14 ft. Lbs.), then secure the engine wiring harness bracket to the evap canister purge solenoid valve stud (8 Nm/71 inch lbs.) apply torque of 12 nm at 106 inch lbs to the Intake Manifold stud. If equipped, install the a/c hose bracket nut (5 Nm/44 inch lbs.) the PCV Valve Hose assembly and additional PCV Valve Hose bracket need installation. Reinstall both cruise control and accelerator control cables when available. Finish by adding coolant to the system then install the air cleaner outlet duct and assembly followed by reconnecting the negative Battery Cable and finally installing the engine cover.
