2001 Buick Century Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2001 Buick Century?
A: Before pan replacement start by disconnecting the battery ground and removing engine mount struts underneath the engine block. Follow the steps for installation of the engine support fixture (J 28467-360) followed by vehicle elevation. The procedure starts by removing the A/C Compressor mounting bolts followed by repositioning its placement and securing it afterward. Next follows the removal of the three-way catalytic converter pipe from the right Exhaust Manifold before draining the engine oil. To begin Oil Pan replacement you should separate the oil level sensor wiring harness before removing the Starter motor and transaxle brace attached to the Oil Pan. After loosening transaxle mount lower nuts and engine mount lower nuts, lower the vehicle. Raising the engine with the engine support fixture (J 28467-360) allows removal of the engine mount bracket and its attached mount positioned on the Oil Pan. Disconnect the right-hand lower Ball Joint and outer tie rod from the Steering Knuckle before removing the right side frame bolts and loosening the left side frame bolts. Use the torque wrench adapter (J 39505) on the right side Oil Pan bolts then remove all left side Oil Pan bolts and retaining bolts to successfully extract the Oil Pan and gasket. Apply sealant to the rear main bearing cap and engine block surface before installing the Oil Pan Gasket and Oil Pan. After that, tighten the Oil Pan retaining bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) before torquing the left Oil Pan side bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). After installing all bolts at their positions, torque the Oil Pan retaining bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) and torque the left Oil Pan side bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). The right Oil Pan side bolts require torque wrench adapter (J 39505) for installation to a torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.), after which the left side frame bolts get tightened and right side frame bolts get installed. Lower the vehicle while you reattach the right-hand lower Ball Joint and outer tie rod to the Steering Knuckle and install the engine mount bracket with engine mount to the Oil Pan. Then use the engine support fixture (J 28467-360) to lower the engine. After raising the vehicle for installation of transaxle mount lower nuts and engine mount lower nuts you should add the transaxle brace to the Oil Pan and finish with Starter motor and oil level sensor wiring harness connection. Put the three-way catalytic converter pipe back into position on the right Exhaust Manifold along with the A/C Compressor before lowering the vehicle and then remove all three fixtures (J 28467-360, J 28467-9OA and J 36462-A). After installing the engine mount struts to the engine you should fill it with new oil before reconnecting the battery ground cable.
