• Q: How to replace the left camshaft on 2001 Cadillac Catera?

  A: The process of repairing the left Camshaft begins with disconnecting the negative cable and continuing with plenum and resonator removal and cover removal of the left Camshaft and Timing Belt. You should first remove the Timing Belt before rotating the Crankshaft counterclockwise to a position 60 degrees before top dead center to avoid valve/piston collision. Install the Timing Belt alignment kit (J 42069-2) into the Camshaft gear slots before gently relaxing the Camshaft gear bolt. Then remove the kit from the system. Divide the Camshaft gear bolt then take out the Camshaft gear while ensuring the Camshaft stays free of lifter-produced loads. Loosen and remove the Camshaft bearing cap bolts in order while recording the bearing cap code marks before taking out the Camshaft with both seal and attached front Camshaft Seal. All bearing surfaces along with sealing areas require cleaning before applying gm p/n 1052367 or equivalent lubrication to Camshaft bearing surfaces. Put the Camshaft into position on the Cylinder Head where the exhaust Camshaft pin faces up at 12 o'clock while the intake Camshaft pin stops at 7 o'clock. Dip the forward edge of the front bearing caps with loctite(R) 573 or equivalent before installing the bearing caps correctly into position and tighten the bearing cap bolts evenly at 8 nm (71 inch lbs.). Dip the lip of the Camshaft Seal with gm p/n 12377985 chassis grease or equivalent and feed it into position with the Camshaft/front main seal installer (J 35268-A) to achieve full seat installation. While using the Timing Belt alignment kit (J 42069-2) to secure the Camshaft gear position, tighten the bolt to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) and implement the torque angle meter (J 36660-A) for additional 60-degree and 15-degree bolt rotations before discontinuing the tool use. The Crankshaft should return to tdc before Timing Belt, front Timing Belt cover, left Camshaft cover, intake plenum, intake air resonator installation followed by negative Battery Cable reinstallation.
