• Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2001 Cadillac Catera?

  A: Begin with removing the transmission to replace the Crankshaft rear oil seal. Hold the Crankshaft counterhold that in the crank hub torx(R) socket (J 42098) and remove the Flywheel bolts discarding them after. Then pull out the fly wheel from the crank shaft and center punch the steel ring of the rear main oil seal, but in doing that caution should be excess since there can be dangerous effects on engine components on the opposite side. Bore a small, shallow pilot hole into steel ring, after that screw up self-tapping screw and pull the rear main oil seal out using pliers. Clean all sealing surfaces and then coat lip of new rear main oil seal with chassis grease, gm p/n 12377985 or equivalent - a small amount. Use the rear main oil sealer installer (J 42067) to install the new seal and to clean the rear Crankshaft flange. Mount the Flywheel to the Crankshaft, applied to the new Flywheel bolts with thread retaining compound, gm p/n 12345493 or similar. Re-install counterhold the Crankshaft again using the crank hub torx(R) socket (J 42098), and screw in the new bolts for the Flywheel and tighten it off at 65 nm(48 ft. Lbs). Last, but not least, use the torque/angle meter (J 36660-A) to turn the Flywheel bolts in the sequence: to begin with, rotate the bolts 30 degrees on the first pass then for the second and final pass rotate the bolts 15 more degress before reinstalling the transmission.
