Cadillac Catera Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the front crankshaft seal on Cadillac Catera?
A: Service and repair of the front Crankshaft Seal should begin by disconnecting the battery negative cable. You must disconnect the battery negative cable before removing the intake air resonator along with the intake plenum and Timing Belt cover. Start by removing the crankshaft balancer bolts then the crankshaft balancer which is followed by the Timing Belt. Detach the crank hub holding tool (J 42065) from the Crankshaft Gear while counterholding its position then loosen the Crankshaft Gear bolt using the crank hub torx socket (J 42098). Remember that the bolt requires high torque removal which may need a long breaker bar to succeed. To continue the procedure remove first the Crankshaft Gear bolt then extract the Crankshaft Gear along with its collar. The first step is to create a tiny pilot hole in the steel ring of the seal after which you should insert a self-tapping screw and extract the front main oil seal using pliers. The surfaces that need sealing require complete cleaning before installation. Utilize the camshaft/front main seal installer (J 35268-A) to tap in the new front main oil seal after coating its lip with gm p/n 12377985 chassis grease or an equivalent substance. The tool should seat the seal evenly until it reaches full seating depth. Secure the crankshaft bolt on top of the collar and gear assembly before applying a new Crankshaft Gear bolt. Using crank hub holding tool j 42065 counterhold the Crankshaft Gear while applying tight torque with crank hub torx socket j 42098 to 250 nm (184 ft. Lbs.) at first then add 45 degrees on the second pass before finishing with 15 degrees extra on the final pass. Replace all components with the Timing Belt and crankshaft balancer plus crankshaft balancer bolts while torquing each bolt to 20 nm (15 ft.lbs.). Reinstall the Timing Belt cover together with the intake plenum and intake air resonator before reconnecting the vehicle battery negative cable.
