2001 Cadillac Eldorado Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2001 Cadillac Eldorado?
A: Begin by removing the Flywheel before replacing the crankshaft rear oil seal. Insert the crankshaft rear oil seal remover (J 42841) onto the crankshaft through its guiding holes then fix it into position with retaining bolts. A variable speed drill motor combined with a socket adapter should be used to drive eight one-inch self-drilling screws into the seal through the guide holes found in the removal tool while gradually lowering speed as screws thread into the seal. Next, remove the retaining bolts from the j 42841 and connect the center screw to it before tightening the screw to extract the seal assembly from the crankshaft. Make sure you clean the drain opening before applying the new seal in order to avoid water leakage. Use wire or an unbound plastic tie-wrap to clear the crankshaft rear oil seal drain of any debris. Use clean engine oil (GM P/N 12345501 or equivalent) to lubricate the cylinder block crankshaft rear oil seal surface while keeping the crankshaft's mounting area free of oil to protect the inside diameter's green coating. Wipe down the Flywheel flange's outer diameter with a clean lint-free fabric and apply engine oil to the new crankshaft rear oil seal's outer rubber surface. Use the crankshaft rear oil seal installer (J 42842) center bolt to create one-half inch of protrusion past the outer plate before positioning the j 42842 around the crankshaft and screwing the three crankshaft flange bolts for full mounting engagement. The installer (J 42842) needs its center bolt tightened to bottom out against the crankcase but the bolt should be loosened to reduce pressure before removing the j 42842 via its three mounting bolts. Examine the full seal installation depth throughout its circular circumference. Reinstall the j 42842 before starting over with the installation protocols if the installation depth lacks uniformity. Finally, reinstall the Flywheel.
