2001 Chevrolet Camaro Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2001 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: You need to start by lifting up the vehicle while sustaining it before placing a drain pan under the transmission Oil Pan. Start by removing the Drain Plug of the Oil Pan (if present) and proceed to remove bolts on the front and sides of the pan while loosening the rear bolts by 4 turns. Striking the Oil Pan with a rubber mallet will allow drainage before completely removing the bolts to take out the Oil Pan assembly with its gasket. Use both hands to twist off the filter before taking out the filter seal while using pliers if needed and disposing of it. Check the filter composition along with fluid color because bronze slivers from bushing wear or steel particles and clutch material show these signs. Solve the transmission case and Oil Pan gasket surfaces with solvent before eliminating all remnants of the previous gasket material. Smear automatic transmission fluid onto the new filter seal before positioning it into the transmission case while driving it in with an appropriate sized socket. Then install the new filter while adjacent to the installation of the Oil Pan and new gasket. Use sealant gm p/n 12346004 on the Oil Pan Drain Plug threads if equipped and then install the plug with a tightening torque of 18 nm (13 ft. Lbs.). Afterward, secure transmission case bolts to 11 nm (97 inch lbs.) while tightening them alternately and evenly. The procedure requires lowering the vehicle so users can add dexron iii transmission fluid which must reach the correct level as measured during the cold fluid state. Users should perform a leak inspection on the Oil Pan gasket.
