2001 Chevrolet Camaro Coil Springs Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front coil springs on 2001 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: Replacing the front coil spring requires these specific tools: strut spring compressor (J 34013-B), modular shock compressor adapter (J 34013-114), strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88), ball joint/tie rod separator (J 39549) and modular shock nut removal set, 15 mm (0.60 inch) (J 39642). A technician needs both the strut spring compressor (J 34013-B), modular shock compressor adapter (J 34013-114) and strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88) along with the Ball Joint/tie rod separator (J 39549) and modular shock nut removal set, 15 mm (0.60 inch) (J 39642). Take proper care of Coil Springs during handling as the coating needs protection. To replace the Brake Master Cylinder nut drivers should first detach the master cylinder's nuts then softly move the Brake Master Cylinder to the side. Start by removing upper shock mounting bolts and nuts and raising and supporting the vehicle before removing wheel and tire. The process starts by separating the stabilizer shaft link while removing the shock absorber lower bolts and nuts next. Finally remove the lower Control Arm cotter pin and its nut. Start by using the Ball Joint/tie rod separator (J 39549) to disconnect the lower Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle before taking out the lower Control Arm and lower Ball Joint. Take a reference mark on the shock absorber's lower mount compared to its upper mount before removing the shock absorber and coil spring. Install the strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88) on the strut spring compressor (J 34013-B) while using the prescribed mounting points for each side. Similarly, mount the modular shock compressor adapter (J 34013-114) on the strut spring compressor (J 34013-B) through its designated mounting locations. After ensuring proper tool alignment install the shock absorber with coil spring onto the adapters. Use the modular shock nut removal set (J 39642) to turn away the shock absorber nut after compressing the coil spring to 13 mm (0.50 inch). After releasing tension on the coil spring the technician removes it from the shock absorber. Mount the coil spring onto your shock absorber before setting the seats correctly and positioning the shock absorber in the strut spring compressor (J 34013-B). To install the shock absorber raise it up empty of spring pressure before pulling down the coil spring until the threaded rod passes through the mount. When installing shock absorber nuts users must apply them to new parts and maintain shock absorber stability during tightening followed by disassembly from the compressor system. Installation requires positioning the shock absorber with its coil spring onto the lower Control Arm before tightening the lower fasteners and aligning the lower Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle for final nut attachment. Start by adding a new cotter pin followed by attaching the stabilizer shaft link and tire and wheel assembly then dropping the vehicle before completing installation with shock absorber upper mounting bolts and their corresponding nuts. When servicing the driver side always move the Brake Master Cylinder before installing its nuts and bolting them to the specified torque.
