2001 Chevrolet Camaro Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace a Shock Absorber with the Required Tools on 2001 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: The needed tools for replacing the Shock Absorber consist of a strut spring compressor (J 34013-B), modular shock compressor adapter (J 34013-114), strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88), Ball Joint/tie rod separator (J 39549), and modular shock nut removal set, 15 mm (0.60 inch) (J 39642). Start the coil spring handling process with caution to protect its coating. When working on the driver side Brake Master Cylinder area remove nuts then shuffle the Brake Master Cylinder away from the assembly. Begin by removing the Shock Absorber upper mounting bolts and nuts followed by raising and supporting the vehicle before taking off the tire along with wheel. Start by removing the stabilizer shaft link before taking off the Shock Absorber lower bolts and nuts then discard the lower Control Arm cotter pin and finally remove its lower nut. The Ball Joint/tie rod separator (J 39549) should aid in Steering Knuckle separation at the lower Ball Joint position before you remove both the lower Control Arm and lower Ball Joint assembly. Take a reference mark indicating the lower mount position against the upper mount just before you uninstall the Shock Absorber and coil spring. Detach the shock absorbent components together with the coil spring from the vehicle. The disassembly process requires installation of strut spring compressor (J 34013-B) followed by attaching modular shock compressor adapter (J 34013-114) using designated holes. The strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88) needs to align properly with the remaining tools. The Shock Absorber rod requires modular shock nut removal set (J 39642) to maintain position when coil spring tension reaches 0.50 inch (13 mm) while securing the Shock Absorber nut. Use the appropriate procedure to relieve coil spring tension before removing the coil spring and Shock Absorber through the strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88). Begin installation of shock absorbers by mounting them to the strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88) followed by attaching Coil Springs to the Shock Absorber yet maintaining downward orientation of mounting ears. Insert the locking pin while correctly adjusting the coil spring seats. Push the Shock Absorber onto the modular shock compressor adapter (J 34013-114) while keeping the coil spring at its natural length then press the coil spring until the Shock Absorber thread enters the mount completely. The Shock Absorber installation requires a new Shock Absorber nut which must be tightened using the modular shock nut removal set j 39642 as the technician keeps the Shock Absorber from moving. Set the coil spring along with Shock Absorber to match the slots inside the strut spring compressor (J 34013-B) before mounting them onto the lower Control Arm. Install lower Shock Absorber bolts followed by nuts while torquing both to 65 nm (48 ft. Lbs.). Then position the lower Ball Joint correctly to the Steering Knuckle before tightening its nut to 110 nm (81 ft. Lbs.). You should install a new lower Ball Joint cotter pin followed by the stabilizer shaft link and wheels and tires and then drop the vehicle before installation of new parts. End the procedure by installing Shock Absorber upper mounting bolts and nuts while tightening the upper mounting nuts to 41 nm (30 ft. Lbs.) and the upper mounting bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). For driver side servicing always reposition the Brake Master Cylinder before securing its nuts by tightening them to 29 nm (21 ft. Lbs.).
