2001 Chevrolet Cavalier Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: To remove and recoil the Timing Chain and sprockets, you must ensure that the ignition key is off and disconnect the negative Battery Cable. Our goal shall be to eliminate the crankcase front cover and align Crankshaft sprocket and Camshaft sprocket timing marks with the alignment tabs on the Timing Chain Tensioner. Measuring the distance between the hole on the bracket to the non-worn surface on the Timing Chain Tensioner shoe; if it is more than 8 mm (0.314), change the tensioner, Timing Chain and both sprockets. Unbolt the Timing Chain Tensioner bolts, camshaft sprocket bolt, camshaft sprocket, Timing Chain, torx bolt, and tensioner assembly. Remove the Crankshaft sprocket by using Crankshaft sprocket puller (J22888-20). For installation use the Crankshaft sprocket installer (J5590) to install the Crankshaft sprocket ensuring it seats against the Crankshaft. Taking a compressor, press the tensioner spring and insert a cotter pin or nail into the opening of the tensioner for holding the chain holding tensioner shoe. Install the Timing Chain and Timing Chain Tensioner. Install the Timing Chain Tensioner without tightening the bolts, bring the Crankshaft and Camshaft timing marks to the tabs on the Timing Chain Tensioner. Install the Camshaft sprocket and timing, tightening the tensioner bolts of the Timing Chain to 24 n.m (18 lb ft) and Camshaft sprocket bolt to 130 n.m (96 lb ft). Remove the cotter pin or nail from the Timing Chain Tensioner, install the crankcase front cover and reconnect negative Battery Cable overtightening the bolt to 16 n.m (12 lb ft).
