2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: Service and Timing Chain repair begins by collecting two essential tools: the tool assembly consists of a universal two jaw puller (J22888-20A) alongside pinion bearing race installer-rear (J5590). Universal two jaw puller (J22888-20A) and pinion bearing race installer-rear (J5590). Begin service by taking off the engine front cover then synchronize the crankshaft sprocket timing mark and camshaft sprocket timing mark with the Timing Chain Tensioner's alignment tabs. Take a measurement of the hole distance and Timing Chain Tensioner shoe length before removing the chain; if the distance exceeds 8mm (0.314) replace all components. A measurement of 8mm (0.314) or more between this opening and the Timing Chain Tensioner shoe indicates it is time to replace all parts including tensioner and sprockets. Start by unbolting the Timing Chain Tensioner and camshaft sprocket then remove its corresponding bolt and camshaft sprocket followed by the Timing Chain. Finally, work on dislodging the torx bolt and tensioner assembly. The universal two jaw puller (J22888-20A) serves to extract the crankshaft sprocket. To install the crankshaft sprocket use the pinion bearing race installer-rear (J5590) while confirming it contacts the crankshaft base. Place a cotttered nail through the spring-loaded Timing Chain Tensioner shoe hole to retain the Timing Chain Tensioner shoe after compressing the spring. Slip the Timing Chain Tensioner into position before tightening its bolts and set the camshaft and crankshaft positions against their indicated tabs on the tensioner device. Place the camshaft sprocket together with the Timing Chain then tighten all bolts to suitable torque values: the Timing Chain Tensioner bolts to 24 nm (18 lb ft) and the camshaft sprocket bolt to 130 nm (96 lb ft). Install the crankcase front cover after removing the Timing Chain Tensioner's cotter pin or nail.
