2001 Chevrolet Corvette Brake Disc Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Brake Discs on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Refinishing of brake rotors only becomes necessary when you find any of the following issues during inspection: severe corrosion, prominent pitting, cracking, heat spots, excessive discoloration from metal contact or scoring beyond limits or measurements that exceed specifications. Check rotor thicknesses while inspecting surfaces and execute hub cleaning using J 42450-A Kit for any corrosion on the hub before performing refinishing tasks. Install the brake rotor onto the brake lathe while following instructions from the manufacturer for secure attachment of vibration-dampening equipment. Check proper rotor friction surface mounting by bringing in cutting tools while the lathe runs until the tools touch the surfaces then verify the witness mark. Remounting the brake rotor to the lathe needs to happen when the witness mark does not reach a clear three-quarters circumference around the rotor. The rotor needs to be refined per manufacturer specifications and the thickness needs checking after cuts before discarding damaged rotors. A non-directional finish requires the specified speed setting and users should utilize 120 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper on a non-directional finishing tool or perform finishing manually with 150 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper and a sanding block. After applying the finish both friction surfaces need cleaning with denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake cleaner. The brake rotor should be taken off the lathe while using the Rotor/Drum Flange Resurfacing Kit (J 41013) to clean wheel bearing flange corrosion to prevent brake system pulsation caused by increased lateral runout.
