Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: In order to replace the Camshaft take out the engine assembly, crankshaft balancer, oil level indicator tube, left and right exhaust manifolds, water pump, intake manifold, coolant air bleeder pipe, left and right valve Rocker Arm covers, valve rocker arms, push rods, left & right cylinder heads, and valve lifters. Next, go ahead and remove the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts and front cover bolts then you remove the front cover and gasket and dispose of old gasket. Turn the engine until the timing marks line up, remove the bolts that hold the Camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain from the sprocket on the Camshaft so that it hangs to rest on the crankshaft sprocket before removing the sprocket from the Camshaft. Clean and inspect the Camshaft and bearings, which does not require rear cover removal if the Camshaft bearings are not being changed. If replacement is necessary learn how to remove Oil Pan-to-rear cover bolts, rear cover bolts, and rear cover along with the gasket discarding it than comes off Camshaft bearings if needed. For install, if needed, install new Camshaft bearings and apply a 5mm bead of sealant gm p/n# 12378190 or like 20mm (0.8-inch) long to the Oil Pan to engine block junction. Mount the rear cover and a new gasket, tighten the rear cover bolts, and tighten the Oil Pan-to-rear cover bolts. Rotate the crankshaft until two opposite holes of the flywheel are aligned with the surface of the Oil Pan. Make sure the tapered legs of the tool of alignment penetrate the rear cover bore of the oil seal and then tighten the j 41476 bolts only until they are snug but do not overtighten them. Tighten the Oil Pan-to-rear cover bolts down to 12nm (106 inch lbs) and the engine rear cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs) then remove the j41476. Replace the crankshaft rear oil seal if necessary and then install the Camshaft, aligning the Camshaft sprocket alignment mark into the 6 o'clock position. Put the Camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain, then bolts Camshaft sprocket with a torque of 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.). Apply a 5 mm bead of sealant gm p/n 12378190 or equivalent 20 mm (0.8 inch) long to the Oil Pan to engine block junction, then install the front cover and a new gasket while snugging the front cover bolts to the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts. Install the j41476 and crankshaft balancer bolt to the front cover, aligning the tapered legs of the j41476 with the machined alignment surface of the front cover, and snug the crankshaft balancer bolt without overtightening. Fasten the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts and engine front cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.), and then remove the j41476. Change a new crankshaft front oil seal, followed by valve lifters, right and left cylinder heads, valve Rocker Arm, push rods, and right and left valve Rocker Arm covers. Finally, fit the final parts, including the coolant air bleed pipe, intake manifold, water pump, left and right exhaust manifolds, oil level indicator tube, crankshaft balancer, and the engine assembly.
