2001 Chevrolet Corvette Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The tools required for Timing Chain and sprocket replacement include a pulley puller (J 8433) and Crankshaft sprocket remover (J 41558), along with Crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2) and Crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J 41665). To replace Timing Chain and sprockets you need pulley puller (J 8433), crankshaft sprocket remover (J 41558) and the Crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2) and Crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J 41665). Start by removing the Oil Pump then disconnect the camshaft sprocket bolts to remove the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain. The service technician must first remove the Crankshaft sprocket with the combination of three key tools: pulley puller (J 8433), crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2), crankshaft sprocket remover (J 41558). The service technician should also remove the Crankshaft sprocket key if needed. Inspection and cleaning of Timing Chain and sprockets should precede their installation process. When reinserting the key into the Crankshaft keyway maintain a tapping motion until both ends align correctly. Position the Crankshaft sprocket at the Crankshaft's front with careful keyway alignment between the Crankshaft and sprocket keys. Then use the Crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J 41665) to properly set the sprocket against the Crankshaft flange. To achieve proper alignment, rotate the Crankshaft sprocket while positioning its alignment mark at 12 o'clock. Confirm both the locating pin on the camshaft sprocket sits within its alignment hole and the sprocket teeth complement the Timing Chain point. After positioning the camshaft sprocket alignment mark at 6 o'clock, install the sprocket along with its Timing Chain while readjusting the sprocket positions to synchronize the timing marks. Install the camshaft sprocket bolts before reinstalling the Oil Pump. While installing use 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.) for bolt torque.
