2001 Chevrolet Corvette Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Make sure you have the required tools before you start removing the engine front cover. You need to use j 41476 front and rear cover alignment (Crankshaft Oil Seal Area) and j 41478 crankshaft front oil seal installer. To start, take off the crankshaft balancer and the Water Pump, then remove the bolts that fasten the Oil Pan to the front cover and the front cover bolts. Once that is done, take off the front cover and gasket, throwing away the old gasket. Clean the front cover and inspect it, making sure you don't reuse the crankshaft oil seal or front cover gasket, and don't put any sealant on the front cover gasket unless you are told to. Apply some gm p/n 12378190 or equivalent sealant in a 5 mm (0.20 inch) bead to the Oil Pan-engine block junction before putting on the new front cover gasket and cover. Make the front cover bolts and the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts nice and snug, but do not overtighten them. Press the j 41476 alignment tool onto the front cover, making sure its tapered legs fit onto the machined places. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt handily, then use a torque wrench to tighten the Oil Pan-to-front cover and front cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Get rid of the j 41476 tool, being sure not to apply lubricant to the oil seal contact area, and retain the old crankshaft oil seal for reuse. Clean engine oil should be applied to the outer edge of the seal and also the front cover bore. Put the crankshaft front oil seal in the j 41478 guide, then push the j 41478 rod (with nut, washer, the guide insert the oil seal into the cover bore using j 41478, keeping the installer bolt hex in place with one wrench and rotating the installer nut clockwise with the other until it is fully in place. After taking out the tool, carefully check that the oil seal is installed right. Be sure to put the Water Pump and crankshaft balancer back on in the correct order.
