2001 Chevrolet Corvette Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Take off the engine Flywheel and then carefully pop the crankshaft rear oil seal off the rear cover. The id of the oil seal must stay dry, and you should never reuse an old one. First, apply a coating of clean engine oil to the outside diameter (OD) of the new oil seal, and do not let oil get on the seal surface. After that, put clean engine oil on the rear cover oil seal bore, making sure not to let any oil touch the surface of the crankshaft. Put the j 41479 cone and bolts onto the back of the crankshaft, and make the bolts just tight enough, without overdoing it. Set the rear oil seal onto the tapered cone and move it into the rear cover bore. Insert the j 41479 threaded rod into the tapered cone and keep going until the tool touches the oil seal. Turn the handle on the tool clockwise until you feel the seal sit firmly into the rear cover and reach the cover's bottom. Then, take off the j 41479 tool and place the engine Flywheel back in place.
