2001 Chevrolet Corvette Harmonic Balancer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What tools are required to service and repair the Harmonic Balancer on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The tools needed for Harmonic Balancer service and repair include a Harmonic Balancer remover (J 41816) along with crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2) and a Flywheel holding tool (J 42386-A) together with Harmonic Balancer and sprocket installer (J 41665) and torque angle meter (J 36660-A). First remove the transmission cover along with its bolt while making sure the pair of Flywheel holding tool teeth engage the engine Flywheel. Place the Flywheel holding tool (J 42386-A) using one m10-1.5 x 120 mm and one m10-1.5 x 45 mm bolt and tighten them to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). The Harmonic Balancer bolt will be recycled for the installation procedure. Make specific marks or script marks on both the Harmonic Balancer and crankshaft end for easy reinstallation alignment. You can remove the balancer using the Harmonic Balancer remover (J 41816) together with crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2). After removal you must clean and inspect the balancer. The installation process starts by positioning the new balancer according to the scribe marks before putting it on the crankshaft. Then use the Harmonic Balancer and sprocket installer (J 41665) to apply necessary torque. Measure the depth of installed balancer by removing the balancer bolt which was tightened to 330 nm (240 ft-lbs) earlier. Secure the new balancer bolt with the torque angle meter (J 36660-A) while tightening it to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) first followed by 140 degrees. To finish the repair the technician needs to take out the Flywheel holding tool (J 42386-A) with attached bolts then put back the right transmission cover and bolt while tightening the cover bolt to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Afterward run the crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure.
