2001 Chevrolet Express 3500 Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the upper ball joint on a light duty suspension on 2001 Chevrolet Express 3500?
A: Before replacing the upper Ball Joint on this vehicle with light suspension you need to lift it and place safety stands under it for proper support. Put your safety stand under the lower Control Arm before taking off the tire and wheel assembly. Take out the brake components including the caliper and the assembly securing hardware that hold the sensor harness and brake hose to the Control Arm. Take out the upper Control Arm unit from the vehicle. Pierce the rivets that hold the Ball Joint to the Control Arm with a center punch before drilling 6.35 mm deep 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) holes into each rivet. Use a half-inch (12.7 mm) drill to remove rivet heads before punching out the units through a small punch. Extract the Ball Joint afterward. Attach the 4 connecting hardware to the upper Control Arm before placing a new upper Ball Joint onto the arm. Seal the joint by tightening its retention fasteners to 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Connect the upper Control Arm to the vehicle after that tighten the brake hose bracket and wheel speed sensor harness nuts to the upper Control Arm using bolt and nut. Secure the brake caliper first then put on the tire and wheel afterward. Verify if all suspension parts have the right space before lifting the safety tools off the ground and testing the wheel alignment at the front. To execute this process you need the j 23742 Ball Joint separator as your equipment.
