  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot on 2001 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: You need the service boot clamp installer (J 22610) to help with installing the Rack and Pinion Boot on your vehicle. First remove the outer tie rod before removing the hex jam nut from the inner tie rod assembly. Begin by unscrewing the tie rod end clamp attached to the Rack and Pinion Boot then cut off the boot clamp with side cutters from the Rack and Pinion Boot. Pull out the Rack and Pinion Boot from its position on the Rack And Pinion gear assembly then discard the boot clamp. Look for any damage on the Rack and Pinion Boot and examine the boot interior for gear oil seepage before moving on. Drain any oil present. Use solvent to clean the Rack and Pinion Boot. During Rack and Pinion Boot assembly use a new boot clamp to secure the boot onto the Rack And Pinion gear assembly and apply grease to both the inner tie rod assembly and the Rack And Pinion gear assembly before attaching the boot to the inner tie rod assembly. Double-check that the Rack and Pinion Boot maintains a straight shape without any puckering. Grasp the Rack and Pinion Boot by hand to straighten it before placing it into the gear assembly groove. Use service boot clamp installer (J 22610) to crimp the boot clamp in position on the Rack and Pinion Boot. The tie rod end clamp installation requires pinching the pliers on the Rack and Pinion Boot before you reinstall the hex jam nut to the inner tie rod assembly.
