- Q: How to replace the starter motor on 2001 GMC Jimmy?A: To replace the Starter motor, first disconnect the negative Battery Cable and lift the vehicle for access. If available, remove the differential carrier shield by removing the bolts used to mount it then go ahead and remove the Starter mounting bolts and disconnect the wires from the solenoid before removing the Starter making a note of the position of any shims. For installation: connect wires to the solenoid; the tightness of the battery positive cable nut should be set to 9 n. M (80 lb. In.) and for the engine wiring harness to Starter nut should be 1.9 n. M (17 lb. In.). Install the Starter and the inboard Starter mounting bolt by not tightening it, and the shims if any needed along with the Starter mounting bolts to be tighten to 50 n.m (37 lb ft). If installed, reconnect the differential carrier shield and its mounting bolts, fastening them to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Finally, lower the vehicle and reconnect the negative cable of the battery.
