2001 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Camshaft Position Sensor on 2001 GMC Safari?
A: The first step to replace the camshaft position (CMP) sensor involves removing the engine cover while disconnecting all Spark Plug Wires and ignition coil wire from the Distributor and then disconnecting the cmp sensor harness connector attached to the Distributor. Begin by detaching both Distributor cap screws and taking out the Distributor cap before removing rotor screws and rotor. First position the square slot of the reluctor wheel toward the cmp sensor and after removing the cmp sensor screws you can take out the cmp sensor. The installation requires new screws that receive thread locking compound instead of the standard screws used to secure the cap and cmp sensor and rotor. Position the cmp sensor into the reluctor wheel slot before fastening new cmp mounting screws which should be tightened at 2.2 n.m (19 lb in). Install the rotor onto the reluctor wheel by restricting its screws with 2 n.m (18 lb in) torque settings. Place the Distributor cap onto the engine block while securing it with new Distributor cap screws which should be tightened to 2.4 n.m (21 lb in). Conclude the engine repair by reconnecting the cmp sensor harness connector while the Spark Plug Wires and ignition coil wire are also reconnected followed by engine cover reinstallation.
