• Q: How to replace the outer CV Joint and seal on 2001 GMC Safari?

  A: To replace the wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal, first, place loose vise jaws on the vise jaws that cover the half-shaft and secure halfshaft in the vise. Use a hand grinder to gently cut through the swage ring without causing damage to the outer race. Slide the halffhaft bar's seal away from the CV Joint outer-race and remove the grease from the CV Joint face. Find the halfshaft bar retaining snap ring in the inner race, and open its ears using j 8059. Take the CV Joint and the seal from the half shaft bar , dispose the old seal for later recycling. Use a brass drift to gently tap the CV Joint cage to tilt it so as to enable removal of the chrome alloy balls one by one until all six balls are removed. Remove the inner race and cage of the CV Joint. Do this by pivoting the CV Joint cage and inner race 90 degrees to align with outer race and lift out. To remove the inner race from the cage, rotate it 90 degrees so that a land will stick out of the window into the cage and pull it out. Clean, thoroughly withcleaning solvent, the inner race assemblies, CV Joint cage as well as chrome alloy balls and dry all parts and inspected for wear/damage and if faulty replace. For assembly, reinspect all parts and add a little light coat of grease to inner and outer race grooves. Hold the inner race on a 90-degree angle to the cage and make the lands align with the cage windows before inserting. Next, push the cage and inner race into the outer race . Use a brass drift to tilt the CV Joint cage and install the chrome alloy balls in the same way as doing the removal. Pack the CV Joint seal and assembly with the pre-measured grease from the kit, insert the new small seal clamp onto the CV Joint seal and slide onto the halfshaft bar and inserting the small end into the groove of the CV Joint seal. Using j 35910, a breaker bar, and a torque wrench to 136 nm (100 ft. Lbs.)), lock closely the small seal clamp from is checking gap dimension area in clamp ear. Pinch the new swage ring into oval shape and slide it over the large diameter of the CV Joint seal, and make sure that the retaining ring side of the CV Joint inner race faces the halfshaft bar before sliding the CV Joint on until the retaining snap ring clicks into place. Slide the large diameter of the CV Joint seal over CV Joint outer race and mount j 36652. Proof seal interaction by using the CV Joint to pull while compensating the CV Joint seal, housing, and swage ring. Perform procedure number 1-72 and position the CV Joint end (outboard end) of the halfshaft bar assembly in the bottom half of j 36652, then in install the top half over CV Joint and seal.
