2002 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the inner CV Joint and seal on 2002 GMC Safari?
A: The process for wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal replacement requires Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) along with Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35910) and Drive Axle Seal Clamp Plier (J 35566). You need three tools to complete the job: Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059), Drive Axle Seal Clamp Plier (J 35910), and Drive Axle Seal Clamp Plier (J 35566). Start your procedure by cutting away the big boot clamp using side cutters from the tripot boot followed by removing the tripot housing and bushing from the halfshaft bar while you wipe grease from the tripot assembly roller bearings and housing. The bushing undergoes disposal while technicians degrease the housing until it dries naturally. A 320 grit 3M cloth eliminates corrosion that remains on the transmission booting surface. Handle the tripot spider assembly with care during this step in order to avoid separating tripot balls and needle rollers. Cut the small boot clamp which should remain on the halfshaft bar end portion of the tripot boot. Position the tripot boot on the halfshaft bar before you open the spider spacer ring with Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059). The retaining ring, spider assembly, spacer ring and tripot boot should be discarded after their removal. Use a wire brush to clean rust off the halfshaft bar followed by an inspection of needle rollers and needle bearings and trunnion for damage with replacement of any impaired components. Position the new small boot clamp onto the joint boot's small end before placing the tripot boot alongside the halfshaft bar with its small boot clamp. Secure the clamp using Drive Axle Seal Clamp Plier (J 35910) and a breaker bar accompanied by a torque wrench that sets the clamp torque to 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). The convolute retainer should be installed by wrapping it around the inboard boot's three convolutions before adding the first spacer ring followed by the tripot spider assembly to the halfshaft bar before placing the second spacer ring into the halfshaft bar's end groove. Guide the spider assembly toward the halfshaft bar's end before dropping the spider spacer ring into the spacer ring groove. Fold the tripot boot with pre-measured grease from the kit while fastening the large retaining clamp to the boot next install the new bushing to the housing then position the housing over the spider assembly. Use Drive Axle Seal Clamp Plier (J 35566) to install the large retaining clamp onto the housing before removing the boot's convolute retainer.
