2001 GMC Safari Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2001 GMC Safari?
A: The procedure starts with disconnecting the battery's negative cable and removing the oil level indicator. Begin the repair by lifting the vehicle and using a drain tray to collect engine oil from the Oil Pan by removing its Drain Plug. Next remove the Oil Filter. Start by removing the bolt holding the oil cooler pipes bracket to the Oil Pan and then disconnect the Oil Filter adapter. First disconnect the bolt which retains the Starter wiring harness and transmission cooler pipes, then detach the crankcase position sensor wiring harness from the retainer and remove the Starter. The technician starts by removing three pieces: the transmission cover followed by the inner axle shaft housing support bracket to frame and washers and lastly mounting nuts and bolts to the front differential carrier. Begin by lowering the front differential carrier assembly just enough to remove the Oil Pan before uninstalling the transmission to Oil Pan bolts and access plugs for the Oil Pan rear nuts. Finally, extract the Oil Pan from the engine. Every surface that requires sealing should get cleaned on both the engine and Oil Pan. Proper transmission alignment requires its prior installation to avoid transmission malfunction when you put in the Oil Pan. Begin installation of the Oil Pan to the engine before adding the transmission to Oil Pan bolts together with nuts which require a torque setting of 47 nm (34 ft. Lbs.). Follow these installation steps in this order: replace the Oil Pan rear access plugs then set the front differential carrier assembly into position afterward secure both carrier mounting bolt sets with their corresponding nuts. The next step is to install the inner axle shaft housing support bracket with frame washers and nuts before adding the transmission cover. Torque the bolts to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). The Starter motor goes in next and the bracket bolt which contains both Starter wiring harness and transmission cooler pipes requires tightening to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Reinstall the ckp sensor wiring harness into its retainer before installing the Oil Filter adapter along with oil cooler pipes bracket bolt while tightening both components to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Point a new filter into position then install the Oil Pan Drain Plug before tightening it to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Lower the car then fill the crankcase with engine oil before reconnecting the black negative end of the battery.
