  • Q: How to replace the lower ball joint on 2001 GMC Savana 3500?
    A: Place vehicle safety stands under it before lifting the car and putting the floor jack under the lower Control Arm. Set up a floor jack under the lower Control Arm to lift the assembly while disconnecting the tire and wheel unit. Disassemble the brake caliper and both lower-ball-joint components. Pull the lower Ball Joint off its installation on the Steering Knuckle with the Ball Joint separator and unfasten it from the knuckle with the j 23742 tool while using a screwdriver to guide the lower Control Arm out of the splash shield and moving the upper Control Arm with a pry bar. Put a wood block against the frame next to the upper Control Arm to keep the knuckle securely out of position. Use the Ball Joint remover/installer set j 9519-e with j 9519-30 tool part to take the lower Ball Joint off the lower Control Arm. Look for any signs of debris or damage at the tapered opening of the Steering Knuckle. Replace the knuckle when necessary. Install a fresh Ball Joint into the lower Control Arm through the Ball Joint remover/installer set (J 9519-30) by tapping it until the joint reaches its lowest position. Place the Ball Joint stud into the Steering Knuckle after removing the wood block and tighten the nut to 128 nm (94 ft. Lbs.) positioning its slot with the stud hole. Secure the new cotter pin by placing the threaded slots between the stud hole and the stud nut then bend the pin to hold it in place. Complete the procedure by putting in the grease fitting, applying grease to the Ball Joint, reattaching the front brake caliper, tire, and wheel until you take out the safety stands and bring the vehicle to the ground before inspecting wheel alignment.
