2001 GMC Savana 3500 Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake pads on a Delco 3400 on 2001 GMC Savana 3500?
A: Before working on delco 3400 brake pads you need to look at the Brake Master Cylinder fluid level; maintain the current position if the level sits between the highest and lowest marks. Elevate the vehicle and take off both tire and wheel sets. Place a large c-clamp over the caliper housing but apply it towards the back of the outboard pad until the piston pushes into the caliper bore enough for removal, then remove the clamp. Apply stout mechanic's wire to hold up the brake caliper to guard against hydraulic hose damage. With the front caliper attached to the mounting bracket take off the hydraulic hose. Next disengage the front outboard pad from the caliper housing by using a flat-bladed tool then remove the front inboard pad. Replace damaged caliper components but do not erase corrosion from parts and swap out damaged bushings or seals. Fit the piston into the caliper hole using a c-clamp while applying gentle pressure and supporting it with an old Brake Pad or wood. Avoid touching the piston sealed surface or caliper boot. Before installation add high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the front caliper and components. Place the front inboard Brake Pad directly on top of the caliper piston. Next apply the front outboard Brake Pad keeping the wear indicator at the front wheel rotation direction. Set the support aside and put the front brake caliper over the rotor followed by the tire and wheel assemblies. Lower the vehicle and apply the Brake Pedal for about 2/3 of its force without engaging the engine. Keep applying pressure until it creates a stable Brake Pedal and top off the reservoir before polishing the brake pads against the discs.
