- Q: How to service and repair the catalytic converter on 2001 GMC Savana 3500?A: Start the Catalytic Converter service work by lifting the vehicle as well as taking out the transmission support. Make sure to put protective goggles along with gloves on before breaking the electrical connections between the oxygen sensors (02S) and heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) from their wiring harnesses. When you use dual Catalytic Converter pipes and just remove the right one the left converter stays in position. Both pipes need to be extracted when processing a left side Catalytic Converter replacement. Use tools to detach retaining nuts and seals which secure the Exhaust Manifold to the Catalytic Converter pipes. To uninstall one Catalytic Converter pipe start by removing the retaining nuts between the exhaust pipe and the Muffler while recognizing the flange can use either 2 or 3 fasteners. Disconnect the Catalytic Converter pipe from the vehicle by removing its gasket then removing the pipe. To remove a vehicle's dual pipes for catalytic converters start by loosening the clamp locking the right converter in front of the Muffler before removing its pipe from the Muffler and vehicle. Proceed to remove the left Catalytic Converter pipe retaining nuts and gasket from its Muffler flange connection then remove the left Catalytic Converter pipe altogether. Remove the needed oxygen sensors from the vehicle when you install a new Catalytic Converter. The installation requires sensor reinstallation whenever you remove them from the system. Start by placing the left Catalytic Converter with its gasket onto the Muffler flange before screwing on the nuts that will retain the converter to the Muffler but leave out any tightness. Place the right Catalytic Converter inside the Muffler before using the clamp for installation while leaving it loose. Mount a single Catalytic Converter pipe onto the Muffler flange by using a new gasket but avoid tightening the flange nuts. Put a new seal onto the exhaust manifolds before you connect the Catalytic Converter pipe through the exhaust manifolds. Use a torque wrench to tighten the exhaust manifolds' nuts to 65 nm (48 ft. Lbs.). Start by inspecting the exhaust system alignment before tightening the right Catalytic Converter clamp to 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.) then finish with Muffler nut tightening at 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the transmission support while connecting the electrical Oxygen Sensor (02S) connection. Check the exhaust system's clearance and component alignment before performing vehicle control.
