- Q: How to replace the left exhaust manifold on 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L engines on 2002 Cadillac Escalade?A: The replacement of a left Exhaust Manifold requires the removal of ignition coils and spark plugs prior to vehicle lifting and supporting. Lower the vehicle while removing Exhaust Manifold pipe nuts to reach the Exhaust Manifold bolts and manifold along with its gasket which need to be discarded. Rinse and inspect the Exhaust Manifold before installation when you plan to keep the existing component. Otherwise separate heat shield bolt attachments and shield components from Exhaust Manifold then perform cleaning checks. The heat shield along with its bolts needs to be installed onto the Exhaust Manifold while torquing each bolt to a value of 9 nm (80 inch lbs.). The bolt hole threads of the Exhaust Manifold on the Cylinder Head must be cleared from any debris or threadlocking material before installing the bolts without sealant on their first three threads. Place threadlock gm p/n 12345493 or equivalent on a 5 mm (0.2 inch) wide area of the Exhaust Manifold bolts before installing the Exhaust Manifold along with a new gasket and bolts. The Exhaust Manifold bolts need two passes of torque application starting from the middle bolts then moving to the left and right stages. The first pass requires 15 nm torque while the second requires 25 nm torque with alternating bolt installation. A flat punch should be used to bend the exposed Exhaust Manifold Gasket section which rests near the rear of the left Cylinder Head. After another vehicle lift you should install the Exhaust Manifold pipe nuts followed by torque application at 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) before you lower the vehicle. Perform the spark plugs and ignition coils installation as the final step.
