2002 Chevrolet Camaro Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2002 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: To replace the Camshaft, the valve lifters, timing chain and sprockets, and Balance Shaft Gear of the Camshaft have to be removed first. Then remove the Camshaft thrust plate bolts and the plate, as well as the Camshaft key. It is important to be careful with the Camshaft during the removal and installation to avoid Camshaft bearing damage because all Camshaft journals have the same diameter. To remove the Camshaft, attach in the Camshaft hole 3, 5/16-18 x 4 in. Bolts, and carefully rotate and pull the Camshaft out. Oil be bearers (early years) eye clutch (late years); oil bearings (1930 model years): inspect Camshaft & beartings; & is important that beartings in Camshaft gear are in good condition & end-play clearance of oil bearings is inspected. For installation, apply lubricant gm p/n 12345501, canada p/n 992704, or equivalent and then mount the Camshaft and the Camshaft key. Next, install the Camshaft thrust plate, making sure you tighten it to 15 nm (11 ft lb) and then install the balance shaft drive gear on the Camshaft. Line up the timing marks on the Balance Shaft Gear and the balance shaft drive gear, followed by replacing the Timing Chain and area between the trigger, and lastly reinserting the valve lifters on their proper locations, respectively.
