2001 Chevrolet Camaro Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2001 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: The process starts with removing valve lifters and Timing Chain along with sprockets once the Balance Shaft Gear has been taken off the Camshaft. Remove the Camshaft thrust plate bolts before removing both the thrust plate and the Camshaft key. The Camshaft requires gentle handling when being uninstalling and installing because damage to the bearings could occur due to the identical diameter throughout all Camshaft journals. Attach three 5/16-18 x 4 in bolts into the Camshaft bolt holes before you rotate the Camshaft carefully to pull it out. Apply prelube gm p/n 12345501 or equivalent product to the Camshaft before you install it. Install the Camshaft and its key and thrust plate while securely tightening the Camshaft thrust plate bolts to achieve a torque value of 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.). Replace the balance shaft drive gear onto the Camshaft followed by proper timing mark alignment between the Balance Shaft Gear and balance shaft drive gear before installing the Timing Chain, sprockets, and valve lifters.
