- Q: How to replace the rear lower control arm on 2002 Chevrolet Corvette?A: To replace the rear lower Control Arm, first lift the vehicle and support it on jack stands, and then remove the tire and wheel assembly. Remove component without measuring before the transverse spring mounting bolt being removed. Turn down the transverse spring compressor (J 33432-A) to the spring and compress it. Disassemble the nuts, bolts, and insulators that hold the transverse spring to the key Control Arm, take the transverse spring off. Jack the lower Control Arm and remove the shock absorber from it. Prevent the Ball Joint from rotating by using a torx (R) tool inserted into the top of the ball stud when loosening the upper Ball Joint stud nut. Separate the upper Ball Joint stud from the suspension knuckle using the Ball Joint separator (J 42188). After separating, remove the separator and the upper Ball Joint stud nut from the Ball Joint stud. Take the nut off the wheel drive shaft of the suspension knuckle, loosen lower Ball Joint stud nut retaining it on, and use j 42188 to detach the lower Ball Joint stud from the suspension knuckle. There is also a need to pull out the separator, and also the lower Ball Joint stud nut, then you have to take off stabilizer shaft link from the lower Control Arm. The place the location of the cam bolts washers, and nuts holding the Control Arm to the crossmember, and alter the jack stand away from the vehicle, then get the lower-Control Arm off the car. In case of installation, then reinstall the lower Control Arm in a vehicle and support it with jack stand. Mount the cam bolts, washers, and nuts, positioning the cam bolts as they were marked at removal, and tighten them so that no torque specification is applied at this time. Mount the lower Control Arm Ball Joint stud into the suspension knuckle using a wrench if necessary to keep the Ball Joint stud from spinning as you tighten the Ball Joint stud nut to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.), then tighten the nut a further 3 1/2 flats, ensuring the minimum final torque on the Ball Joint stud nut is 55 nm (41 ft. Lbs.). Attach the stabilizer shaft link back to the Control Arm then tightening the nuts to 72 nm (53 ft. Lbs.) then install the shock absorber into the lower Control Arm by tightening the lower mount bolt to 220 nm (162 ft. Lbs.). Mount the transverse spring to the lower Control Arm, followed by the transverse spring insulators as well as mounting bolts. Take off the jack stand and reset the transverse spring stud height to the levels that were measured earlier. Replace j 33432-a, remove the tire and wheel assembly, and align the rear wheels, torquing the lower Control Arm (front) cam bolt to 145 nm (107 ft. Lbs.) cam bolt and the lower Control Arm (rear) cam bolt to 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.).
