2002 Chevrolet Express 2500 Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the lower ball joint on 2002 Chevrolet Express 2500?
A: Use the Ball Joint remover/installer set j9519-e plus Ball Joint separator part j23742 to perform this job. Position the vehicle securely using safety stands and lift it up. Put the floor jack under the lower Control Arm to hold the part before you take off the tire and wheel. Detach the front brake caliper then take off the cotter pin and lower Ball Joint nut. Insert the Ball Joint separator j23742 to disconnect the joint from its position then take out the lower Ball Joint from the knuckle at the same time move the lower Control Arm away from splash shield by using a screwdriver. Lift up the upper Control Arm with a pry bar. Put a wooden barrier between the frame and upper Control Arm to store the knuckle assembly out of the way. Install the lower Ball Joint into the lower Control Arm using the Ball Joint remover/installer set part j9519-30. Check the Steering Knuckle tapered hole for particles and cracks before replacing it entirely. Insert a new Ball Joint into the lower Control Arm through the Ball Joint remover/installer set (J9519-30) device and push it down until it reaches its proper bottom position. Put the wooden block aside when installing the Ball Joint stud into the Steering Knuckle. Place the stud nut onto its threads and fasten it at 128 nm (94 ft. Lbs.) so that the slot aligns with the stud opening. Use a new cotter pin by placing its slots over the stud openings and bend it to lock in place. After greasing the new Ball Joint you should install the grease fitting then restore the front brake caliper and tire-wheeldue before taking out safety stands lowering the vehicle and examining wheel alignment.
