2002 Chevrolet Impala Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the outer tie rod end on 2002 Chevrolet Impala?
A: Primary steps to change the outer Tie Rod End start by raising the vehicle and removing both tire and wheel components. The prevailing torque nut on the outer tie rod assembly should be eliminated before the jam nut on the inner tie rod assembly gets loose. Inserting a wedge between the joint and attached part because driving the wedge causes dangerous seal damage to the steering linkage. The universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) enables removal of the outer tie rod assembly from the Steering Knuckle so you can detach the outer tie rod assembly from the inner tie rod assembly. The outer tie rod assembly should be joined to the inner tie rod assembly before tightening the jam nut. The Steering Knuckle must have the outer tie rod assembly placed into it before tightening the prevailing torque nut to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.) with an additional 120-degree rotation until 2 1/2 - 4 1/2 threads can be seen after the nylon washer. When installing the tire and wheel assembly after tightening the jam nut to 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.) against the outer tie rod assembly the vehicle needs to be lowered then a front end alignment must be performed.
