2001 Chevrolet Impala Tie Rod End Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the outer tie rod end on 2001 Chevrolet Impala?
A: The replacement of the outer Tie Rod End begins by elevating the vehicle and utilizing proper support. Start by removing the wheel and tire after which you should take off the prevailing torque nut from the outer tie rod assembly. The universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) supports tie rod removal by using it to separate the outer tie rod assembly from the Steering Knuckle. First, loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod assembly before proceeding with removal. After separation of the outer tie rod assembly from the inner tie rod assembly proceed with the next step. When putting in the assemblies position the outer tie rod assembly on the inner tie rod assembly but leave the jam nut untouched. The Steering Knuckle receives the outer tie rod assembly followed by installation of the prevailing torque nut to which the technician applies 30 nm torque while performing 120 degrees of rotation (22 foot pounds and 120 degrees rotation). After installing the tire and wheel assembly the vehicle should be lowered before performing a front end alignment while you tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod assembly to 68 nm (50 ft. Lbs.).
