2002 Chevrolet Prizm Tie Rod End Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the outer tie rod end on 2002 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: The first requirement to replace the outer Tie Rod End is elevating the vehicle with supportive measures. Place matchmarks on the outer tie rod and inner tie rod nut as well as inner tie rod before removing the front wheel and tire assembly. Start by untightening the inner tie rod nut followed by discarding the outer tie rod cotter pin then the outer tie rod nut . The steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B) allows detachment of the outer tie rod from its knuckle connection before removal of the outer tie rod . When installing the parts join the outer tie rod to the inner tie rod section (i) ensuring matchmarks line up before leaving the inner tie rod nut unfastened. Use the fastener notice in service precautions then install the outer tie rod to the Steering Knuckle. Install the outer tie rod nut to the outer tie rod and tighten it to 49 nm (36 ft. Lbs.) while aligning the cotter pin slot by tightening the outer tie rod nut up to 1/6 additional turn or a maximum of 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.). Manual workers should avoid turning the outer tie rod nut before placing the cotter pin. The installation of the cotter pin should proceed through the tie rod stud hole with the Rack and Pinion Boot positioned correctly next to the toe adjustment process. Settle the front toe position before clamping the jam nut onto the outer tie rod to achieve 56 nm (41 ft. Lbs.).
