2002 Chevrolet Tahoe Universal Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the universal joint with an external snap ring on 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe?
A: You need two tools to replace the universal joint with an external snap ring: U-Joint Bearing Separator (J 9522-3) and U-Joint Bearing Spacer Remover (J 9522-5). Hold the propeller shaft steady with level support so you do not clamp on the tubing which can harm it. Put permanent markers on the propeller shaft to position it correctly during reassembly. To remove snap rings use pliers while tapping the end of the cup as needed to release pressure. Use the U-Joint Bearing Separator J 9522-3 on the lower 30 mm hex head socket or 27 mm socket to push the lower bearing cup out of the yoke ear. To push out the partial bearing cup position the U-Joint Bearing Spacer Remover (J 9522-5) between the seal and the cup. Turning the propeller shaft pushes the opposite bearing cup out of the slip yoke to mark its proper reassembly orientation. Look for damage when you pull off the cross and other joint pieces while checking the cup bore and ring space. Place one bearing cup into the yoke and fit the cross assembly while making sure it moves without resistance. Push the bearing cup all the way into the yoke ear and verify side-by-side alignment before you repeat the process on the other side. Push the bearing retainer to its place while keeping an eye on the retainer groove. Stop pressing when both retaining slots snap into position. When needed you should use a dead blow hammer to gently push the yoke while also applying chassis grease to the snap ring for smooth installation into the bearing cup groove.
