2002 Chevrolet Tracker Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul brake calipers on 2002 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: Suppose you need to fix the brake caliper by lifting the car first after securing it on supports. Remove both tire and wheel before taking out the caliper from its vehicular location. Handle the Piston with care and never put your fingers in front of it when using compressed air because it creates major risks to your body. You should wear safety glasses during this process to shield your eyes from harm. Limit your pressurized air to slide the Piston out without damaging a broken Piston. A tough wooden piece or shop cloth should enter the caliper from within to capture the Piston as compressed air drives it out. Afterward adjust the Piston out through the caliper brake hose connection port. Take off the rubber boot from the caliper groove to access and push out the Piston seal. Then use a flat plastic tool and pull the Piston seal from the caliper. Also uninstall the bleeder valve and caliper pin bolts with their associated boots. Avoid eye and skin contact with brake fluid which can cause irritation; wash eyes under running water for 20 minutes and use soap plus water for skin exposure while seeking medical help for swallowed fluid. Defend painted surfaces and electrical parts from brake fluid by employing shop cloths along with proper containers and fender shields and always drain brake fluid residues before storing them safely. Soak the caliper slide bushings, caliper set ring, Piston, and caliper cylinder bore in brake fluid before checking for marks, rust, or damage to the chrome surface on the Piston that must be replaced when these defects exist. Check the caliper cylinder clear space for microscopic damage and corrosion before polishing it with crocus fabric. Replace the caliper if corrosion can't be smoothed away. After installing new caliper boot and pin bolts you should slide the Piston with a new Piston seal into the caliper bore. Place the new Piston boot onto the Piston and put the Piston into the caliper from top to bottom while fitting the Piston boot over the caliper groove. Keep the Piston from exiting the cylinder as you install the parts. Pull the Piston to check if the boot fits properly in the caliper groove before pushing the Piston into the caliper and seating it in the bores. Replace the brake fluid at the bleeder valve during hydraulic brake bleeding before retaining the valve again. Affix the caliper to the vehicle before adding the tire and wheel parts. Then lower the vehicle to install everything properly while pumping out the brake fluid.
