  • Q: How to replace the inner tie rod on 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
    A: First obtain these necessary tools to replace an inner Tie Rod: inner Tie Rod wrench (J34028). Inner Tie Rod wrench (J34028). Start by removing the Rack and Pinion Boot and then mount the gear in a vise. Steering gear preload adjustment must remain unchanged before moving the inner Tie Rod because any changes could result in damaging components. Position the shock dampener outside the inner Tie Rod assembly before guiding it back onto the rack. Place a pipe wrench on the valve side of the steering gear which will protect the inner Tie Rod housing throughout the procedure. Place the pipe wrench on the rack next to the inner Tie Rod housing then use a wrench on the flats to rotate the housing counterclockwise until it separates from the rack. Apply the pipe wrench correctly at the other gear end of the installation before proceeding. Clear all previous loctite residue from rack threads as well as inner Tie Rod threads. Apply loctite 262 (or equivalent) to the inner Tie Rod threads before sliding the shock dampener forward onto the rack when performing installation. The installation process requires a pipe wrench on the rack by the inner Tie Rod housing. Then use the inner Tie Rod wrench (J34028) with a torque wrench to apply 100 nm of torque (74 ft. Lbs.) to the inner Tie Rod housing. Put the shock dampener into the inner Tie Rod housing until it reaches its lowest point before repeating the same step with the inner Tie Rod . Check that the torque meter is accurate. Move the gear from the vise before you install the Rack and Pinion Boot.
