2003 Buick Century Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the alternator on 2003 Buick Century?
A: Begin the generator replacement process by disconnecting the negative Battery Cable then removing the Drive Belt which runs on the generator. Proceed to accessible position the coolant recovery reservoir before removing the generator rear brace nut along with bolts (1, 2, 3) from the generator. Detach the electrical connector before removing the protective boot from the generator output bat terminal. The generator output bat terminal nut can then be removed to disconnect the positive battery lead. Position the new generator at the engine location and install the positive battery lead to the unit. Clamp the generator output bat terminal nut with a torque of 20 n.m (15 lb ft). Install the protective boot onto the bat terminal of the generator output before you join the electrical connector. Screw in the generator bolts (2, 3) without applying torque followed by the pivot bolt installation which also stays loose. The torque sequence demands to start with a 50 n.m (37 lb ft) tightening of the generator pivot bolt then move to a 50 n.m (37 lb ft) tightening of the generator bolt followed by the generator bolt which requires a 50 n.m (37 lb ft) final tightening. Fasten the generator rear brace nut to 25 n.m of torque (18 lb ft) final value. You should replace the coolant recovery reservoir before you put the Drive Belt in place and reattach the negative Battery Cable.
