2003 Buick Century Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2003 Buick Century?
A: Service of the powertrain control module (PCM) can be achieved through pcm replacement or eeprom programming the electrically erasable programmable read-only memory. Thorough inspection of the pcm must happen to verify that the correct replacement part is selected. The installation of a new service pcm will require programming because it does not arrive with programming. The eeprom problems are detected through diagnostic trouble code p0602 because this code shows that either the eeprom is unprogrammed or has functional issues. Protect the connector pins and soldered components of the circuit board from electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage by keeping away from them. Application and removal of pcm connectors together with power source separation requiring the ignition to be set off ensures safe installation or removal of the Battery Cable and pcm pigtail and pcm Fuse and jumper cables. The starting point for removal is disconnecting the negative Battery Cable after which you must remove the air cleaner housing cover assembly. The removal process requires pcm disconnection from its connectors followed by pcm separation from the air cleaner housing during which pcm connector disconnection completes pcm extraction. Install the pcm first by connecting it to the connectors before tightening the connections to 8 n.m (71 lb in) then continue with reinstallation of the pcm combined with its harness into the air cleaner housing followed by air cleaner housing cover assembly installation. The last step involves reattaching the negative Battery Cable followed by programing the new pcm through service programming system (SPS) procedures.
