- Q: How to replace the front outer CV joint and seal on 2003 Buick Rendezvous?A: First prepare necessary tools: drive shaft seal clamp pliers (J42572) to handle front wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal replacement. Drive shaft seal clamp pliers (J42572). Place a shop towel around the Axle Shaft before placing the wheel drive shaft horizontally into the vise. Use a side cutter or suitable tool to detach the large and small seal retaining clamps from the outer joint seal before discarding them. After removing the seal from the outer race of the large diameter end you should place it behind the joint surface. To remove the outer joint from the Axle Shaft take these steps: hold the joint housing and place a wood block between the seal and the joint then strike the block with a hammer until the Axle Shaft retaining clip is compressed. Thorough cleaning operations using solvent follow the removal of the retaining ring and seal from the Axle Shaft. Components must completely air dry before continuing. The assembly process starts with placing the cage's larger radius corners upward and then placing both the inner race and inner race into proper alignment. Place the cage and inner race into the outer race with both larger radius corners facing upward while maintaining visibility of the inner race's grooved surface. Put balls into sequence while checking that there are no empty spaces between ball tracks and the inner race. After application of specified lubrication the assembly begins with a new small seal retaining clamp that goes onto the Axle Shaft followed by the seal and new retaining ring. Begin by applying Axle Shaft splines into inner race splines followed by flat-bladed tool compression of the Axle Shaft retaining ring until the outer joint slips onto the shaft with a light hammer strike. The final step requires use of the j42572 device to properly crimp both the small and large seal retaining clamps to specified torque specifications and verify the seals are free of damage or deformities.
