2003 Chevrolet Corvette Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2003 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The tools needed to change timing chains and sprockets include a pulley puller (J8433), Crankshaft sprocket remover (J41558), Crankshaft end protector (J41816-2) alongside a Crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J41665). Users need to use four tools to complete the replacement: pulley puller (J8433), Crankshaft sprocket remover (J41558), Crankshaft end protector (J41816-2), and Crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J41665). Start by unmating the Oil Pump from the assembly and then uninstall both camshaft sprocket bolts followed by the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain extraction. Use the pulley puller (J8433), Crankshaft end protector (J41816-2) and Crankshaft sprocket remover (J41558) to remove the Crankshaft sprocket. Also remove the Crankshaft sprocket key when needed. Inspection and cleaning should happen first for the Timing Chain and sprockets before starting their installation operation. Fit the key into the Crankshaft keyway until both key ends completely rest against their positions. Use the Crankshaft balancer with sprocket installer (J41665) to fully seat the Crankshaft sprocket against the Crankshaft flange after you install and properly align the key between the Crankshaft sprocket and its keyway. Child-step the Crankshaft sprocket while positioning its alignment mark at the 12 o'clock marker to confirm the camshaft sprocket locating pin matches the camshaft sprocket alignment hole while the sprocket teeth engage with the Timing Chain. After installing the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain you must control the timing mark positions by adjusting the camshaft or Crankshaft sprockets when necessary. After tightening the camshaft sprocket bolts to 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.) reinstall the Oil Pump.
